Over 50 educators from Barbados and throughout the Caribbean have completed a significant epilepsy education workshop, empowering them with critical skills to better support students with epilepsy.
The event, called Bright Futures, Safe Classrooms, was held at the Solutions Centre, University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus.
Participants included teachers at every educational level and 15 teacher trainers from UWI.
Dr. Laurette Bristol, director of the UWI School of Education, stressed the importance of equipping educators with practical seizure management knowledge to create safe, inclusive classrooms.
She also called for tackling the stigma surrounding epilepsy in schools.
Dr. Henderson Carter, Faculty Dean, highlighted that such training strengthens schools’ ability to support students with neurological differences.
The initiative, a collaboration with the International League Against Epilepsy and Epilepsy Society of the Caribbean, will expand with a Summer Institute for educator certification and future parental engagement. Read More... |

Prime Minister Mia Mottley has unveiled a proposed constitutional amendment designed to stop Members of Parliament from switching party allegiance without facing a by-election.
Under the proposed rules, MPs who resign, are expelled, or join another party would be required to vacate their seats, triggering a by-election and potentially reshaping the parliamentary landscape.
This marks the first time political parties would be formally recognized in Barbados’ Constitution, a move that is generating heated discussion.
Political scientist Dr. Kristina Hinds voiced concerns that such measures could give party leaders too much control, possibly silencing dissent among members.
Opposition Senator Ryan Walters warned that shifting legal authority from voters to party structures risks undermining parliamentary democracy.
