Highlighting violence against women and women's empowerment efforts |
In Barbados, the Ministry of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs is intensifying efforts to combat gender-based violence. Minister Adrian Forde emphasized the urgency of this issue during a recent service at Ellerton Wesleyan Holiness Church in St. George.
Forde highlighted findings from a survey by the Inter-American Development Bank, revealing a persistent threat of violence against women and other vulnerable groups. He stressed the necessity for ongoing public discourse and action to address these challenges.
To raise awareness, the ministry has launched an island-wide campaign featuring messages at bus stops and on billboards, promoting respect for women and vulnerable populations. Forde noted that eleven such advertisements have been installed, with plans to expand further.
In addition to awareness initiatives, the ministry is actively supporting women's empowerment. A recent entrepreneurship expo showcased over twenty young entrepreneurs, including individuals with disabilities, aiming to foster an entrepreneurial atmosphere.
Forde acknowledged ongoing inequalities, such as underpaid or unpaid labor, disproportionately affecting women. He pointed out that approximately 42% of households in Barbados are headed by single females, underscoring the need for societal recognition and collaborative solutions.
The newly established Social Empowerment Agency is set to play a pivotal role in addressing these issues and strengthening support systems for families. Forde affirmed the ministry's commitment to partnering with women and women's organizations to ensure equitable access to government services and opportunities.
In a related development, the National Organisation of Women (NOW) recently conducted a motorcade during the 16 Days of Activism campaign. This initiative aimed to provide accessible contact points for individuals experiencing gender-based violence, emphasizing the importance of community engagement and continuous sensitization efforts.
These concerted efforts reflect a national commitment to eradicating gender-based violence and promoting women's empowerment across Barbados. |
